Taleo OBIEE Dashboard Design Best Practices

Taleo OBIEE Dashboard is created to display multiple analysis, key performance indicators, and reports in an easily accessible and visually compelling format. So as to track the various parameter and ensure that activities are kept up to date and on target. The following are to be kept in mind when designing a dashboard:

  • Avoid too many pages in the Dashboard – This leads to cluttering and the page may be beyond the visible range leading to scrolling
  • Make it interactive – Have column selectors, Drill down, Prompts
  • Delete Unused Views – Each view has an impact on performance and would need maintenance
  • Put a default value in dashboard prompts – This will prevent execution of a long queries that returns all data from the database
  • Ensure that the export is formatted – Dashboard may need to be exported to PDF or Excel for distribution. You need to ensure that the output is properly aligned.

Pitfalls to avoid during ETL Testing of DecisionStream to Informatica migration

ETL testing  differs from conventional testing in which we need to validate the data at the completion of ETL process to ensure that there is no loss, duplication or incorrect data.

Some of the major challenges to look out for when migrating from CognosDecisionStream to Informatica are:

  • Lack of Business logic data across development and Production area. This leads to new defects being found in Production when migrated from development environment.
  • The volume of the data is very large in production environment hence testing requires more time and may lead to performance issues which are complex to debug
  • The CognosDecisionStream would generate NULL values where as in Informatica it would reflect as empty space in database.
  • The sequence generated surrogate Key in Informatica sort order would not match with the DecisionStreamgenerated surrogate Key.
  • The data generated from DecisionStream would have special characters, where as in Informatica special characters was not supported hence while testing, convert function need to be used in place where special characters were found.

Managing Oracle Fusion HCM Extract Parameters

Oracle Fusion HCM Extract adds a list of parameters to the Extract by default based on the profile (such as HR, Payroll, Benefits etc.) that we select to create the HCM Extract. To modify the provided list of parameters in the Extract as per our requirements, Refine Extracts feature can be used.

Using Refine Extracts, we can manage the HCM Extract Parameters as given below:

1. We can have different type of parameters such as Choice list, Date Picker, Radio Button and List of Values.
2. Using Lookup in the Refine Extracts, We can select which column should be used as parameter.
3. We can also set the parameter value to be derived from a SQL using Post SQL Bind.
4. Default values could be set to the parameter, this will be useful when we are running the Extract only for a particular Legal Employer or Payroll at all times.
5. A Parameter can be displayed or hidden. Display option could be set to NO, if we would like to hide a parameter.

How to Load the Stored Procedure data-set automatically during Report initialization and insert the data to a temp table in Actuate BIRT

There are several situations where the reports need to run periodically and retrieve data for a particular time period.

Actuate BIRT allows Stored Procedure data-set by which the data can be pushed to the temp tables, but the challenge here is to invoke a Stored Procedure data-set that does not perform select but an insert operation.

You can achieve the same by creating a Stored Procedure dataset that inserts the data to the temp table based on the current SESSION_ID and then Insert a dummy Data Component in BIRT report and bind the Stored Procedure dataset.

This will load the Stored Procedure data-set automatically during Report initialization and insert the data to a temp table

Steps to save and reuse a set of filters in Taleo OBIEE Answers

In Taleo OBIEE Answers we have an option to save a set of filters and reuse it across a shared environment. This helps to reduce the efforts in re-creating frequently used filters.

  • Create a filter or a set of filters in OBIEE Answers as usual
  • In the filters section, on the header part you will find an arrow icon (>>) which provides the option to save the set of filters that you have created
  • The operators, operands and the conditions will remain the same and this set of filter gets saved into any preferred location on the OBIEE Server
  • You can have it in your personal folders or even in the shared filters to share it among other users
  • These saved filters can be added to any of the Taleo OBIEE Answers report, from the left side pane of the criteria tab

How to get the current data in Oracle Taleo OBIEE report

Oracle Taleo OBIEE report if run the first time, will get cached if the caching is enabled. The report will be fetched from the cache for subsequent executions. This will not reflect the changes that occur in the underlying database after the first report run, as the report is coming from cache.

Steps to disable cache at the report level

  1. Edit the analysis report
  2. Navigate to the advanced tab
  3. In the Prefix text area, add the command “SET VARIABLE DISABLE_CACHE_HIT = 1;
  4. Click on the “Apply SQL” button below the text area
  5. Save the report

If you execute the report after these changes, the report will fetch the results from the database and not from the cache.

To enable the caching, remove this command from the prefix and hit “Apply SQL” button, save the report and execute it.

Person Management data for employee assignments in Oracle Fusion HCM

Oracle Fusion HCM has a feature Person Management to track all the employee Assignments, employee details

For example, we can use the Person Number, Location, Name, Effective Date to get an employee detail.

Below are the list of major factors to use the Person Management data to track all your employee assignments in Oracle Fusion HCM reports

  • To identify an employee work relationship where he/she worked and used in HCM reports
  • Action Reason Code can be used to track all the details related to Assignment level and employer level in HCM Reports.
  • To check the employee Assignment Details and also whether the employee is eligible for payroll or not. This scenario can be used to get all historical data of employee for Audit purpose.
  • We can get the Person previous and current work Address, Home Address and personal details in reports
  • Assignment Action Date can be used as a filter in the extract and report level to get the required data for an employee.
  • We can use the History Assignment entity to get the Global Transfer Data of an employee in HCM Report.

We can use the Person Management concept to obtain all data related to employees which will help in periodic tracking and also for Audit purposes.

Why use Element Entries based reports in Oracle Fusion HCM during Payroll cycle.

Oracle Fusion HCM Element entries provide a good snapshot at the elements going to be processed on our employees next paychecks – compensation, benefit or taxation details for earnings and deductions.

It would be very difficult to go through every employee record to see if she/he is wrongly contributed to incorrect elements or if she/he needs refund on the tax deductions.

To make the validations simpler you can create an analysis report on your Oracle Fusion HCM system which makes your payroll process an easy one.

Below are the list of major scenarios that your organization might need HCM extract to pull data for

  • To identify if anyone has contributed to the incorrect elements and need a refund.
  • If there is particular range of amounts for certain elements that needs to be reviewed before processing.
  • If Deduction Contribution needs have been reviewed.
  • Check if any employee have contribution limit on particular element and see if it exceeds limit set IRS/Tax systems.
  • If an element has a negative value.
  • To identify if there are any employee is transferred and had benefit and/or compensation deductions that may need setup on their new company.
  • List of active contributions/deductions.

We can have multiple reports based out of extracts to pull the above information for the whole organization which can also help in Payroll Auditing Process apart from our periodic validation.
